In the fall of 2005, after years of resisting her mother’s invitations, this lovely lady arrived at our rehearsal hall ready to learn a couple of songs so she could perform on our Christmas Show. In January of the following year Nancy was sung in, along with her 12 year old daughter, creating a first for Alberta Heartland Chorus, three generations of Sweet Adelines, grandmother, mother and granddaughter on our risers.
From the beginning Nancy was a natural with many of our coaches remarking on her great face. She once admitted that she was a bit shy but we all found that hard to believe as she stepped up to the front row. Nancy’s willingness to be flexible was demonstrated when she moved to the Bass section after singing Lead for a couple of years(?). Nancy is not a half-measure type of girl. It wasn’t long before she became our Membership Coordinator which had her teaming up with the Marketing Coordinator to hold one of the largest membership drives this chorus had seen. As a member of the Management team she was a great support to all members of the team, showing strong leadership skills.
It doesn’t stop there however. Nancy next took on the roles of Performance Coordinator, Director’s Assistant, Costume Chair and Bass Section leader on the Music Committee. She started singing with her daughter in Eclipse quartet in 20—and most recently in their new quartet Double Take, and if that wasn’t enough Nancy, as a dual member of Lions Gate Chorus in Vancouver, competed at International last year in Hawaii. She has also attended International Educational events on behalf of the chorus and presented her learnings to the chorus with skill and humour.
Nancy, our very capable Team Leader, is currently enrolled in the Director Certification Program, is a member of the Vocal Warm-up team and an all-round team player. Her gentle approach to everything she does endears her to each and every one of us. If we had one regret it would be that it took Nancy so long to get here.
What the members say: “Nancy's energetic love for our chorus is taking us to new and improved levels.” “always willing to help us be our best.” “She is a caring, loving individual who truly represents what a Sweet Adeline should be.”
It’s is because of all this that it gives us the greatest pleasure Nancy, to name you our nominee for the 2014 Spirit of 26 Award.
